Most PPL(H) theory is completed through structured self-study. Arcus uses Pooleys-supported self-study textbooks, adds personal teaching where it helps, and welcomes students to study in our teaching rooms whenever they need a focused place or a little support.

Work through the course at your own pace. You are welcome to use our teaching rooms when a quieter, aviation-focused environment would help.
Arcus instructors can explain difficult subjects, answer questions and help turn theory into practical understanding.
Each PPL(H) theory examination costs £55 at Arcus, making the nine written examinations £495 in total.
Communications is one of the nine written subjects. The Radiotelephony Operators Licence Exam (FRTOL) is an additional, separate requirement with its own fee.

No. Theory and flying normally develop alongside one another. We will help you plan both sensibly and keep the relevant examination and licence-application timescales in view.
Air Law; Human Performance; Meteorology; Communications; Navigation; Principles of Flight – Helicopter; Operational Procedures – Helicopter; Flight Performance and Planning – Helicopter; and Aircraft General Knowledge – Helicopter.

Yes. We encourage students to use our teaching rooms if they want somewhere focused to study, have questions for the team or simply benefit from being around the school.
Not quite. Communications is one of the nine written theory exams. You must also pass the separate Radiotelephony Operators Licence Exam (FRTOL) and meet the CAA English-language proficiency requirement.
